Basically, verizion is giving you 30 days to opt out of passing your information around to everyone they feel like, for whatever reason they feel like.

Hmm...not entirely.

My understanding of it (see the Fark.com thread on this topic) is that it only applies to data-sharing within the Verizon "family". For example, Verizon Wireless could share your information with Verizon DSL if you had both services, so you could then receive a combined bill. I'm sure that if you're a Verizon Wireless customer, they'd also market DSL and other services to you as well.

But I don't believe they're going to be passing your information to any non-Verizon-family (Vodaphone owns part of Verizon, and so is part of the family) like marketers and whatnot.
